Broward’s Newest Park Opens In Miramar

miramar-pineland-parkMiramar Pineland Park, Broward County’s newest, opened this spring, and SRS was delighted to have been a part of its creation. Our work, commissioned by Broward County’s Parks and Recreation Division, included site development, master planning, and construction administration. At a cost of $2.9 million, the 157-acre site at University Drive near Florida Turnpike’s Homestead Extension was transformed from a forgotten land parcel into a park designed for recreation and appreciation of preserved, diverse native Florida elements. Visitors can now enjoy dedicated walkways and trails through the forest, scrubby flatlands, and distinctive vegetative areas, and venture across boardwalks to explore the restored wetlands.

The park also offers an expansive covered playground; the County’s first public interactive children’s water play Splash Pad; and three rental shelters for picnics, parties, and barbecues.

Of special note, Miramar Pineland Park was designed to accommodate the controlled burns that occur in nature, which provide for recurring seasonal growth of native vegetation.

SRS Is Named Gallery Consultant to New Lauderhill Museum

After winning a series of architectural design and appearance awards for Lauderhill Municipal Complex, SRS is pleased to be involved in the city’s Historical Museum. Merrill Romanik was the architect and interior designer for Lauderhill’s award-winning City Hall and has been asked to turn her magic onto the museum’s gallery programming, exhibit areas, and display themes.

The Lauderhill Historical Preservation Committee, formed more than a year ago, has accumulated several hundred items and is consulting with the Archaeological and Historical Conservancy to set up the organization of the city’s artifacts and memorabilia.

As Merrill was recently quoted in a Sun-Sentinel article: “The museum will have different themes, such as early native Lauderhill residents, the history of the city, important people in the city’s history, history of the police and fire departments, and Inverrary and Jackie Gleason.”

SRS Reaches Across The State…

Did you know SRS has designed many diverse projects in Central Florida and the Gulf Coast?

Bidding on a project in a new venue requires a lot of homework long before we begin to develop the proposal. We immerse ourselves in the local culture, learn as much as we can about the demographics, the uses and population served by the project, as well as research the subcontractors in the area best suited to fulfill our vision and design at the most favorable cost to the client.”

– Merrill Romanik

Projects around the state include restaurants, retail shops, office buildings, parks and fitness clubs, residential communities, and fire stations.

The Water’s Fine. Jump In!

Nautical Ventures Marine CenterNothing inspires our staff more than the challenges and finding solutions for creating new project designs. From master-planning inland parks to designing marinas, SRS lives up to our motto: Think SRS…Think Success!

SRS recently signed an agreement with Nautical Ventures South, Inc. for site development, architectural design, and master planning for a new marina and showroom.

When construction began on the new runway for Fort Lauderdale International Airport, it hastened the timetable for Nautical Ventures Marine Center to relocate. The opportunity wasn’t unwelcome, as it gave the management time to rethink their business. In its new location off Bryan Road, the marine center, a free-standing, tilt-wall building, features an expansive 13,000 SF showroom with a comprehensive assortment of products related to Florida’s legendary and thriving water sports activities. Outdoors, the new complex will offer a state-of-the-art boat launch area and docking space for 17 boats.

For more than 25 years, Nautical Ventures has featured products and services such as kayaks, sailing supplies, snorkeling gear, windsurfers, water skis, pedal and banana boats, floating docks, inflatable boats, clothing, and resort, beach, and sailing information and reservations.

Dania Beach Renaissance

dania-beach-cra-projects1 For the past year, SRS has been working as design consultant for The Dania Beach Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA). We take great civic pride in fulfilling the CRA’s mission to transform the historic commercial districts into a charming visitor-friendly place for shopping, services, and refreshments. Retailers, restaurants, and other business establishments are eligible for CRA matching grants to improve and enhance their site façades and interior design.

According to a 2012 Times Magazine article, sociology’s “broken windows theory” holds that neighborhoods and cities that fix their broken windows, graffiti, and other signs of neglect not only improve appearances that attract visitors and residents, but also illustrate good citizenship while, of course, increasing property value.

To date, SRS has prepared sketch designs for these participants taking advantage of the grant program: 225 East Dania Beach Boulevard, 1000 South Federal Highway, Docker’s Restaurant, Brighten Dental Care, Gallery of Amazing Things, Liberty Suites, Davidson’s Antiques, Nu-Black Septic, Mervac Neon, Collins Market, Wayside Inn, Asker Inn for a Drink, and Jeremy Earl. Improvements are under construction for the following properties: Staged Right, Ward’s Restaurant, Liggett Rexall Drug, Dania Beach Florist, and Millennium Fire. Construction and installations are complete for Grampa’s Restaurant, The Beauty Factory, and Kingshead Pub.

Meet Our New Team Members…

SRS is pleased to announce the appointment of two new team members:

lauren-holzmanLauren Holzman is a talented graduate architect who completed her Master of Architecture degree in 2012 at the renowned Savannah College of Art and Design. She brings a multidimensional and dynamic presence to the firm. A multi-tasker, Lauren enjoys both the challenges of creativity and emerging technologies. She grew up in Davie and was encouraged by her family early on to pursue her interests wherever they might lead. That path included music: Lauren is a versatile musician with proficiency in the oboe, trombone, percussion, piano, and guitar. During her undergraduate years at the University of Hartford in Connecticut, Lauren was a vice president and board member of A.I.A.S. (American Institute of Architecture Students) and an active supporter of Women Against Rape and Sexual Assault. At SRS, Lauren’s aim is to design residences. “I love the idea of creating a happy home.”

lorraine-sarfatiLorraine Sarfati has joined the firm as our Director of Accounting. Her responsibilities include financial management in the areas of billing, payroll, banking, and communication with clients, vendors, and consultants. A problem-solver who brings a high degree of efficiency and intelligence to the job, Lorraine is multilingual, conversant in Hebrew and Spanish, as well as English. With a Bachelor of Arts degree in Legal Psychology, earned at Miami’s Florida International University, it’s no surprise that Lorraine is a skilled communicator. In her personal life, she enjoys mountain biking, diving, and guitar.

A Milestone Year!

srs-staffAnniversaries typically celebrate the end of something, a milestone, a marker. But as we celebrate the 25th anniversary of our firm, we look to the future, to a colorful vision of new beginnings. For that’s what an architect does, looks at what is, and imagines what can be.

Yet underlying everything we do, we feel an obligation of stewardship to our communities: to sustain and conserve resources, and to pair functionality with positive design impact.

In 2012, we stepped forward with our new firm name, changed when partners Manny Synalovski and Merrill Romanik welcomed Jose Saye as our third partner. Jose, who ‘s been with the firm since 1999, brings an outstanding work ethic, professional integrity, creativity, and warm interpersonal skills that infuse client relationships and generate successful outcomes.

With our entire team fully engaged and motivated, we claimed the year 2012 as our championship season. Into the first half of 2013, this year promises to be an even better one, as our plans to grow the firm were launched. We’re be elaborating on existing services, adding others, entering new markets, taking on more complex projects, and sharing our experiences with you on this Blog as we head out on this journey.

We thank you for being part of SRS Thoughts and Sketches. For us, the journey begins with Architecture, but the goal is to serve the Community. We share our success with you: clients who’ve partnered with us, colleagues and contractors, and the public entities and communities of which we are a part.

New Schools Shaping Up!

Fort Lauderdale High School

fl-high-school-aerialConstruction is progressing on schedule for the updated Fort Lauderdale High School, with a target completion date of August 2013. On its current site since the 1960s, Fort Lauderdale High School was in serious need of modernization. Our firm was chosen to design and oversee construction for the $15.9 million renewal project. The project adds two new three-story buildings: one for administrative functions, and the other for academics. New parking and remodeling of existing science labs are also part of the plan.

Montessori Academy – Pembroke Pines

montessori-academyWith Phase 2 construction of Pembroke Pines’ Montessori Academy completed, it introduces the largest privately owned Montessori school in the nation. Working with developer Modan Enterprises, we designed the $6 million project on 4.25 acres on Pines Boulevard in two phases: Completed in 2007, Phase 1 includes a 35,000 SF building with 20 classrooms that accommodate infants through kindergarteners. Phase 2 adds 45,000 SF to the project and will accommodate elementary and middle school classrooms, science labs, arts and media centers, computer labs, gymnasium, and an open courtyard/play area.

KLA School – North Bay Village

kla-north-bayConstruction is complete at the early childhood KLA school at 7800 Hispanola Avenue in North Bay Village, and registration has begun for the fall term, brightening the educational outlook for young families and their children. We transformed the building from its former use as a religious institution into a bright and spacious environment that offers programs for children ranging from three months to five years in age. SRS worked with the client, Sotreza,LLC, on the programming, architectural design, interior design, and engineering for the 9,860 SF school. We placed classrooms along the perimeter of the interior to secure natural light in all the learning spaces, and removed pavement to accommodate a fenced and landscaped outdoor play area. We also provided streamlined services for permitting, development, site development, construction documents, site plan approval, and contract administration. We do it all. It’s what we do.

Breaking News

Village on Fifth

Good news! Plans for Village on Fifth were approved by the City of Plantation, and construction began on December 26, 2012. The developer, Gestion IB, is maximizing the use of the 47,980 SF site, one of only a few rare parcels of land still available in Plantation. We designed a community of 17 townhomes in a trio of two, three-, and four-story buildings. Floor plans offer three-, four-, and five-bedroom formats, as well as two-car garages per residence. Happy days for Plantation homebuyers!

Yogurt UR Way Café

Our design for Art Metrano’s Hollywood Beach Broadwalk café is “making waves” with its award-winning wave-shaped canopy and innovative entry.
